WASHINGTON, D.C. - After the Davidson field hockey team battled Georgetown through just under 76 minutes of scoreless action, freshman Annie Evans' first career goal gave Davidson a 1-0 overtime win Friday afternoon at the Jacobs Recreational Complex in Washington, D.C.
Evans netted the game-winner at the 75:53 mark in the extra period on her first career shot, a point-blank attempt that found its way past the Georgetown goalkeeper and into the net for the Wildcats' second-straight win.
The two squads were stuck in a defensive battle throughout the first half, combining for just eight shots in the opening 35 minutes, and went into the half tied 0-0.
Georgetown (0-3) provided the offensive pressure in the second frame, out-shooting Davidson 8-1 in the half and taking five penalty corners to just two by Davidson (2-1).
In the overtime, Wildcat goalkeeper Christa Goeke had to stop back-to-back shots within four seconds of each other to keep the 'Cats in the game. After Goeke made her third stop of the overtime period, Evans capitalized on the counter-attack for the game-winning score.
Goeke was excellent in goal for the entire contest, notching a season-high 11 saves to record her second-straight shut out of the season. She now has 266 saves in her career, which is good for fourth place on the Davidson all-time career saves list.
The Hoyas out-shot Davidson by a 16-6 margin in the contest, including an 11-1 advantage in shots-on-goal. Sophomore Hannah English led the 'Cats with a pair of scoring attempts, with Christine Rua, Clare Perry and Gray Robinson each taking one shot, and Robinson having the team's only other shot on goal.
The win was Davidson's sixth-straight over the Hoyas, with their last loss coming back in 2000. The Wildcats now hold an 8-4 lead in the all-time series.
The 'Cats will look to extend their winning streak tomorrow, Sept. 5, when they take on Cornell at 2:00 p.m. The first-ever meeting between these two schools will be held on the campus of American University.
