DAVIDSON, N.C. — More than 1,800 student-athletes, led by Davidson College's 268, from 12 member institutions were named to the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll for the 2008-09 academic year.
This is the most honorees since the inception of the honor roll, surpassing the previous high by nearly 200 student-athletes.
The average GPA of the 1,809 student-athletes was 3.45, and greater than 40 percent of the recognized student-athletes achieved at least a 3.5 grade point average, including 61 students who posted a 4.0.
With their 268 student-athletes honored on the list, the Wildcats landed the most on the honor roll, which is the most of any school since the inception of the SoCon Academic Honor Roll. Seven of the 11 schools increased their numbers from the previous year, including all-time highs from Appalachian State, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Georgia Southern, Samford, Western Carolina and Wofford. Appalachian State had the second most honorees with 182, followed by Elon (178), College of Charleston (161) and Western Carolina (159).
Football boasted the most student-athletes on the list with 300, followed by women's soccer with 187, women's track and field and cross country with 166 and baseball with 147. All student-athletes are included on the list, which includes all 19 SoCon sponsored sports as well as non-sponsored sports in field hockey, lacrosse, swimming, equestrian, rifle and sailing. League schools who sponsor swimming are members of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association.
Southern Conference athletic directors established the honor roll prior to the 1988-89 athletic year as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports at member institutions and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher while passing at least 24 hours in two semesters of classes or its equivalent for other academic calendars.
