
Wildcats Drop Southern Conference Opener, 3-0, at Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Despite 10 kills each from Jorden and Madison Benedict, the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team dropped its Southern Conference opener, 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-16) at Wofford Saturday afternoon at the Ben Johnson Arena.
The Benedict sisters each tallied 10 kills to lead the Wildcats (2-13, 0-1 SoCon), who also got 31 assists from junior Hayley Lawson and 14 digs from freshman Molly Crenshaw.
Wofford (14-3, 1-1 SoCon) was led by Stacy Byrd with 12 kills. Joanna Suddath totaled 29 assists, while Shanna Hughes and Sarah Palmer each posted 13 digs.
Wofford jumped out to a 12-7 lead in the first set, but the Davidson Wildcats rallied late to knot the score at 21. Trailing 20-15, the 'Cats evened the set with a 6-1 run, but the Terriers would earn possession on a Wildcat service error and win the last four points for the 25-21 victory.
The 'Cats took a quick 6-1 lead to open the second set on kills from Madison Benedict and junior Sarabeth Peele, but Wofford evened the set with a 5-0 run. Davidson won the next three points to put some distance between the teams, but the Terriers hung around until, with Davidson holding a slight 13-11 lead, they took control with a 7-1 run to open a 18-14 gap. Two straight putaways by Jorden Benedict cut the Terriers' lead to two, 22-20, but Wofford would win a second straight set by a 25-21 margin behind a 3-1 run to finish.
Wofford pulled ahead 9-3 early and held the lead throughout the final set. The Terriers closed out the match with a 5-0 run and secured their first SoCon win with the 25-16 decision.
Davidson will return to action with a 4 p.m. match at Furman (8-3, 1-0 SoCon) tomorrow. The Paladins opened their Southern Conference slate with a 3-1 win over Georgia Southern earlier this afternoon.
