Wildcats Tripped Up at Furman in 3-0 Loss

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Caroline Adams led the Furman Paladins past the Davidson Wildcats, 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-11) in Southern Conference volleyball action Sunday afternoon at the Alley Gymnasium.

Adams recorded 11 kills - the only player in the match to reach double digits, and hit .733 to pace Furman (9-3, 2-0 SoCon). Kelsey Salava posted 31 assists, and Stephanie Smith led the Paladin defense with 12 digs.

Davidson (2-14, 0-2 SoCon) got seven kills from both Madison Benedict and Sarabeth Peele. Hayley Lawson had 17 assists, and Molly Crenshaw topped the Davidson defense with 12 digs.

Knotted at 3-3 in the first set, the Paladins won three straight points to open a slight 6-3 lead to open the match. Two straight kills from Jorden Benedict and Erin Lupfer put Davidson within two at 12-10, but the 'Cats would get no closer. Furman started to pull away towards the end of the set, eventually capturing the 25-18 win on an Alexis Shaffer kill.

Furman took a commanding 15-5 lead to start the second set, and the Wildcats were unable to recover. The Paladins won the last two points on Wildcat errors to claim the 25-14 win and go ahead 2-0 in the match. The third set played out similarly, with the Paladins taking an early 15-7 lead and closing with an 11-4 run to win the match with a 25-11 win.

Davidson will step out of conference play for a pair of matches, hosting N.C. A&T at Belk Arena Tuesday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Gardner-Webb Friday for a 7 p.m. contest. Davidson returns to Southern Conference play with a trip to Birmingham, Ala., to face Samford Sunday at 2 p.m. (CT).
