CULLOWHEE, N.C. — Despite outshooting Western Carolina 12-8, with eight of those shots on goal, Davidson fell short in a 2-0 road contest to open up Southern Conference play in women's soccer action on Friday evening at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
The Wildcats suffered their third loss in a row to fall to 3-7-0 overall, and dropped their first SoCon opener since the 2001 season when they opened league play with a 4-1 setback to Furman. Western Carolina improved to 4-3-2 and 1-0-0 in SoCon action.
The first half was a back and forth contest, as Davidson narrowly held the shot advantage after one half of play at 5-4 and both teams went into the locker room knotted at zero.
Western would then strike for the game-winner four minutes into the new half as Bri Cunningham launched a ball from 20 yards out that clipped the top-right cross bar before falling into the back of the net at the 49:13 mark.
Roughly six minutes later in the 55th minute, the Catamounts added an insurance goal off the foot of Jenny Matteson. The Catamount defender sent a free kick from 50 yards away into the box, where the ball skipped out of the Wildcats' Jessie Baxa's (Bloomfield, Mich) hands in goal before it found its way between the pipes for the second score at the 55:29 mark.
Davidson would get four more shots on goal and a corner kick after the 55th minute, putting all four shots on goal, but the Catamounts' Caitlin Williams stopped each one to earn her 18th career shutout to tie the school record.
Baxa finished with four saves for Davidson between the pipes.
Senior Blakely Low (San Antonio, Texas) led the Wildcats with five shots, putting three of those on goal, while three other 'Cats tied with two shots each.
The 'Cats wrap up their five-game road swing with a 7 p.m. contest at Appalachian State on Sunday. Davidson has won its past two contests against the Mountaineers.
Scoring Summary
49:13 WCU Bri Cunningham (unassisted)
