DAVIDSON, N.C. — In search of their fourth straight win in the all-time series vs. their cross-county rival, the Davidson women's soccer team fell just short as Charlotte scored two second half goals on its way to a 2-0 win over the Wildcats on Thursday evening at Alumni Stadium.
The Wildcats saw their record fall to 2-4-0 on the year, and had their three-match win streak halted in the all-time series. Improving to 4-1-0 was the 49ers as they pushed their record in the series to 9-3-2.
The two teams had not faced each other since the 2006 campaign, and Davidson had outscored Charlotte 6-1 in its last three wins over the 49ers.
For the whole first half and the beginning of the second, both teams battled it out, pressuring each others defenses and looking to break up the scoreless game.
It was finally broken in the 54th minute when Charlotte's leading scorer Whitney Weinraub knocked in her sixth goal of the season off a cross from her teammate, India Winford. The 49ers had worked the ball down to the goal line on the near side of the field, where Winford sent a cross into the six-yard box and Weinraub shielded her defender to gather in the ball and kick in the pass to the far right post.
Charlotte then came back down to the Wildcats' end and found the back of the net again at the 62:14 mark off a corner kick that was sent in by Sam Huecker and headed in by Lena Suarez for her first goal of the season and a 2-0 49er lead.
Davidson continued to pressure the 49er defense, getting a few opportunities to get on the board with a couple of corner kicks in the 77th and 85th minutes, but the Wildcats were not able to capitalize in falling 2-0.
Senior Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) nearly gave the Wildcats an early lead in the first half. She took a long through ball and drove from midfield to the far side of the 18-yard box and ripped a shot that just missed going top shelf, hitting the cross bar and then the ball was cleared out by the 49er defense.
Charlotte held a 15-6 advantage on shots, while picking up four corners to the 'Cats two.
Senior Loring Ward (Charleston, S.C.), making her second straight start between the pipes, tallied a season-best five saves, while Lauren Brown came up with two saves for Charlotte.
Davidson will now embark on a five-match road trip, first visiting the High Point Panthers on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m.
