Davidson Football Names 2009 Captains

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson football coach Tripp Merritt announced today that fullback Kirk Benedict, defensive tackle Alex Griswold, defensive tackle Daniel Hauffe, linebacker Tyler Lemons and offensive lineman Jason Perillo have been named captains of the 2009 team. The captains, all of whom are seniors, were selected in a vote by the student-athletes and coaching staff.
Benedict has started 21 straight games, tied for the most of any returning lettermen. He has played in 31 career contests, rushed for 59 yards and three touchdowns and caught 36 passes for 324 yards and three scores. He was a second-team All-Pioneer Football League?selection in 2007.
Griswold has made 17 career starts and played in 23 games. He ranked ninth in the PFL?in tackles by a lineman in 2008, making 41 stops, including five for loss and 2.5 sacks. Griswold has 66 career tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.
Hauffe topped the PFL?in tackles by a lineman a season ago and ranked 18th overall (62 tackles) and 11th in tackles for loss (10.5). He has played in 26 career games and started the last 21 contests. Hauffe has 103 career tackles, 16 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.
Lemons was named second-team All-PFL last season after ranking second in the league in tackles and tying for second in forced fumbles. He started all 11 games and recorded 91 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Lemons has started 18 consecutive games and 23 for his career. He has 169 career stops, including 11 tackles for loss and four sacks.
A second-year starter on the offensive line, Perillo started all 11 games in 2008 and has played in 15 career contests. The Wildcats ranked second in the PFL?in passing and fourth in total offense a season ago.
Davidson opens the 2009 campaign at Elon, ranked No. 11 in The Sports Network FCS Preseason Poll, Saturday, Sept. 5. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
