2009 Schedule
DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's soccer team will be seeking to add to the program's three Southern Conference Titles with the release of the 2009 schedule as announced by head coach Greg Ashton.
The 2009 campaign will feature contests against Atlantic Coast Conference foes N.C. State and Virginia Tech, a trip to UNC Wilmington and Richmond, along with a home matchup against Villanova, the first in the program's 20-year history. The Wildcats will also square off against cross-county rival Charlotte, Sept. 10, to go along with their 11-game slate in the SoCon.
The Wildcats hit the 10-win mark for the fifth straight year last season, closing out the 2008 campaign with a 10-6-3 mark, and finishing fourth in regular-season league play with an 8-3-0 record. They return 18 letterwinners, including eight starters.
Davidson starts its quest in 2009 with three straight road contests at Winthrop (Aug. 22), N.C. State (Aug. 28) and UNC Wilmington (Aug. 30). The Wildcats last faced the Eagles in 2006, playing to a 2-2 draw, while they will be looking to avenge losses to the Wolfpack and UNC Wilmington the past two years.
September sees the 'Cats open up their home schedule with a contest against Villanova, Sept. 4, followed by two more home games against Francis Marion and Charlotte. Villanova had its 10th straight winning season last year, earning an 11-7-1 record.
After taking a year off of playing the 49ers, Davidson returns to take on its cross-county rival at home. The 49ers had a very successful run last fall, fashioning an 18-4-1 record that included a perfect 11-0 mark in the Atlantic 10, a trip into the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a ranking of 25th nationally by Soccer Buzz Magazine.
Davidson will then embark on a season-long five-game road trip that sees the Wildcats visit non-conference opponents High Point, Richmond and Virginia Tech. The 'Cats have won the last five games against the Panthers, winning all five contests, while sporting a 7-1 record in the all-time series. Last season saw Davidson and Richmond play to a 1-1 tie at the Davidson Tournament, while the Wildcats scored a solid 2-1 opening-season home win over the Hokies.
Davidson closes out the month of September by finishing its five-match road swing, while also opening up SoCon action with road contests at Western Carolina and Appalachian State, Sept. 25 and 27. Western Carolina, which was ranked 58th out of the 64 teams that qualified for last year's NCAA tournament, returns 18 letterwinners and nine starters from a year ago when the Catamounts won the conference tournament. The Catamounts took a 2-1 decision in last year's meeting with Davidson.
Following the two road contests, six of the Wildcats' last nine league games are at home, where they went 5-3-2 last fall and have gone 30-9-5 during the past five years. UNC Greensboro, Elon and College of Charleston open up the month of October for the Wildcats, who went 2-1 against the three schools in 2008. The Spartans earned the regular-season league title and return eight starters from last season's 16-4-3 squad. The 'Cats have won their last six meetings against Elon, while they own a 9-3-0 all-time record against the Cougars.
After playing a single road game at The Citadel (Oct. 11), Davidson hosts Furman and Wofford on the weekend of Oct. 16-18. The Wildcats earned 3-2 and 1-0 regular season wins last year against both schools, but the Paladins ended the 'Cats tournament run when they picked up a 1-0 victory with a late goal in the quarterfinals.
The regular season comes to an end then with trips to Chattanooga and Samford, Oct. 23 and 25, and then a home contest vs. Georgia Southern on the 31st. The Wildcats scored wins against all three schools a year ago, including the program's first victory against the Bulldogs. Davidson looks to continue its winning ways over the Mocs, owning a 12-1-1 all -time record, and the Eagles, having won six of the past seven meetings and 15 all-time.
The Southern Conference Tournament will have a different look in 2009 as only the top-four teams in the final regular-season standings will advance to post-season play. The top seed will reserve the right to host the other three qualifiers on their home field.
Since 1994, the first year the Wildcats were members of the SoCon, Davidson has gone 14-11 in the conference tournament and taken home the championship title three times — 1994, '95 and '96.
