Men’s Golf Eighth After First Round of SoCon Championships

FLORENCE, S.C. - The Davidson men's golf team fired a first-round 299 and sits in eighth place at the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championships at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C.
Senior Michael Saari, the reigning SoCon Golfer of the Week, carded a one-over par 73 and is tied for 18th, just two strokes out of the top ten. One shot behind him is sophomore Bobby Urso who shot a 74, good for a tie for 23rd.
Wildcat teammates David Fowler and Christopher Rollins are tied for 37th place with identical four-over 76s in the first round. In his first conference championship round, freshman Jackson Taylor is in 50th following his 78 over the first 18.
With all five players shooting even par or better on the day, Chattanooga shot an 11-under par 277 to grab the first round lead. Georgia Southern's Drew Lethem shot the low round of the day with a six-under par 66.
Chattanooga, the two-time defending champion of the event, was led by junior Derek Rende with a 67 (-5) while Fredrik Qvicker and Stephan Jaeger each shot three-under par 69. Georgia Southern finished one stroke behind Chattanooga at 278 (-10) as the Eagles' top four scorers were all under par on the round.
Western Carolina and Furman (286) sit in a tie for third place following round one while College of Charleston (293) and UNC Greensboro (293) are tied for fifth and Elon (295) occupies seventh. Sitting behind Davidson in the standings were Appalachian State (300), Samford (302) and Wofford (306).
Round two of the championship begins Monday morning at 8 a.m. ET with results updated every three holes at www.golfstatresults.com
