CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Alex Hoyt set a new school record in the 3,000-meter run to lead the Davidson men's track & field team at the Joe Hilton UNC Invitational, held on the campus of the University of North Carolina over the weekend.
Hoyt tripped the tape in 8:31.61, breaking the previous record set by teammate Thad Sieracki earlier this season. The performance was good for third place in the event for Hoyt, who was followed by classmate Lance Harden's fourth place finish with a time of 8:39.53, which was in the top-ten performances in school history at 3,000-meters. Joining the two seniors in the top ten for the meet was Greg Marcil, who brought home seventh place, crossing the line in 8:59.36.
Competing in the javelin, sophomore Jake Leonard tossed the second-longest throw on the team this season, recording a top distance of 42.84 meters, which placed him 13th.
In the 1,500-meter run, the 'Cats had five runners post times within two seconds of each other, led by Peter Bruton's mark of 4:03.96. He was followed by Blake Evitt (4:04.27), Ian Tupper (4:04.27), Charlie Schmitt (4:04.63) and Ryan Hopkins (4:06.29).
Freshman Taylor Martin came in just out of the top ten in his first career 400-meter hurdle performance, finishing 12th overall with a time of 58.58 in the finals.
The Wildcats will now turn their focus to preparation for the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships, which will take place on April 25-26 in Statesboro, Ga. Davidson will look to improve on their fourth-place finish at least year's championships.
