DAVIDSON, N.C. -- This weekend's baseball schedule at Wilson Field has been adjusted due to concerns with weather, with the Davidson Wildcats and the Cincinnati Bearcats scheduled to play four games.
Because of heavy rain expected this weekend, the scheduled games with Georgetown and Pennsylvania have been canceled.
Instead, Davidson and Cincinnati will play Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 4 p.m. and a double-header Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
Scouting the Bearcats
After an opening weekend in Florida, Cincinnati heads south with an 0-3 record. The Bearcats dropped three games at the inaugural BIG EAST/Big Ten Baseball Challenge, opening with an 11-10 loss to Purdue, followed by losses to Michigan (6-1) and Ohio State (6-5).
In the 2009 BIG EAST preseason poll, UC was picked to finish fifth by the BIG EAST head coaches. Seniors Michael Hill and Cameron Satterwhite were chosen to the all-BIG EAST Preseason Team.
Louisville was unanimously chosen as the favorite to win the 2009 conference championship. Louisville's Chris Dominguez and Justin Marks took home Preseason Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year honors, respectively. USF was picked to finish in second, followed by Notre Dame (99 votes), St. John's (93 votes), and Cincinnati (77 votes). Filling out spots six through 10 were Connecticut, West Virginia, Rutgers, Seton Hall, and Villanova. Pittsburgh and Georgetown were selected 11th, and 12th, respectively.
Sophomore Jason Riddell was a tough out as he batted .615, going 8-for-13 from the plate. In his rookie campaign, Riddell played in 40 games and made 35 starts for the Bearcats, collecting two home runs, 15 RBI and a slugging percentage of .360.
Matt Webb Named SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week
After helping the Wildcats to a 4-1 opening week, senior shortstop Matt Webb was named Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for all sporting events from Feb. 18-24, the league office announced Wednesday.
The senior sports a 3.752 GPA in psychology in the classroom.
On the diamond, Webb batted .444 in five games, hitting two doubles and driving in two RBIs while scoring seven runs. Webb has also been perfect on the base paths, going 5-for-5 in stolen bases. Webb also pitched a hitless ninth inning, retiring the only three batters he faced in the 'Cats' 12-5 win over Lafayette Saturday.
