DAVIDSON, N.C. — Multi-goal games by Becky Horton and Jen Crawford were not enough to hold off a late charge by the Bucknell Bisons as Bonnie Buechel scored the tying and game-winning goals in leading her team to a 9-8 win over Davidson on Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
The Wildcats, who open their 2009 campaign with seven straight home contests, fell to 1-1, while Bucknell improved to 2-0 on the year.
Davidson jumped out of the gate fast to start the contest with Horton netting her first goal of the season less than a minute into the game. Crawford followed with two strikes in the 27th minute, and Davidson had a 3-0 lead with a little over three minutes run off the clock.
Freshman Erin Keitel, fresh off a stellar debut game on Feb. 15 that saw her net four goals, all on free-position shots, gave the Wildcats a 4-1 lead at the 24:25 mark with one of three free-position shots Davidson connected on for the game.
Bucknell countered with back-to-back goals from Carol Donohue and Chelsea Peters, before Davidson went back on the offensive attack for a 7-3 lead. Horton tallied two free-position shots at the 7:13 and 4:47 mark, while senior Callie Seymour earned her second goal of the season to start the three-goal run.
The first half closed with a flurry as Crawford picked up her 10th goal of the season with just 13 ticks on the clock, but Julia Braun brought the Bison's to within three at halftime with a horn-beating goal off an assist from Donohue.
Coming out of the break, Bucknell turned up the defensive intensity, holding Davidson to six shots, nine below their total in the first half, and rallied from the three-goal deficit to earn the win.
Buechel started and ended the rally for Bucknell with a free-position goal at the 21:43 to bring the Bison within two at 8-6.
After Jenna Lotkowictz netted the Bisons' seventh goal, Buechel drew a foul inside the box for a free-position shot and capitalized with a score at the 15:36 mark to draw the two teams even at 8-all.
Buechel then gathered in the draw control to start the new possession and proceeded to take it down the field, working the ball around the perimeter until she drove in and picked up the game-winner with 14:46 on the clock.
Davidson forced four turnovers in the closing 14 minutes, but were only able to get off two more shots.
Crawford's three-goal outing was her second straight multi-goal game after netting a career-best six goals to open the season.
Lotkowictz gave Bucknell two players with multiple goals, finishing with two scores.
The Bisons' Alyssa DeLorenz picked up a game-high 12 saves between the pipes, while Michelle Pav closed with three for the 'Cats.
Davidson takes a break until the 28th of February when it plays host to St. Mary's of California with gametime set for 1 p.m.
