DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson wrestling team will compete at home for the first time this season, as they will host the Davidson Open on Saturday in the Baker Sports Complex. The competition is set to begin at 9 a.m. and updated brackets will be posted at DavidsonWildcats.com throughout the day as they become available.
Wrestlers from No. 24 Virginia Tech and Southern Conference rivals Appalachian State, The Citadel and UNC Greensboro are among those scheduled to compete. Anderson, Newberry, UNC Pembroke, Limestone and Campbell will also be represented.
Matches will be held on five mats. The double-elimination, non-team scoring tournament will feature 32-man brackets in each of the 10 weight classes.
This will be the third tournament that the 'Cats have competed in so far this season. Davidson opened the season at Virginia Tech's Hokie Open, where at 141 pounds junior Vitaly Radsky advanced to the quarterfinals to lead the 'Cats. The following week at the UNC Pembroke Open, sophomore David DeCamp (149) and senior Ben Altman (125) both placed third in their respective weight classes.
Radsky is 5-2 so far this season and enters the Davidson Open as the defending champion at 141 pounds. He scored a major decision in his first dual meet of the 2009-10 season at Duke on Wednesday.
Altman leads the Wildcats with nine wins this season, as well as nine points scored in dual meets, while DeCamp boasts an 8-4 mark. DeCamp defeated all eight collegiate competitors he faced at the Pembroke Open, pinning a team-leading four and only losing to an unattached competitor. Altman and freshmen Matt Zarth (125) and Ike Crews (184) each have two pins this season.
The Wildcats will be looking to prepare for their first SoCon dual meet of the year, as defending Southern Conference champion Chattanooga will visit the Belk Arena on Friday, Dec. 18. Davidson is 0-5 to start the season after facing nationally-ranked competition at the Sprawl & Brawl hosted by Binghamton and suffering a defeat at Duke on Wednesday.
