DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's soccer team will be well represented when they enter the Southern Conference Tournament this weekend with all-league honorees as the Wildcats placed four players on the first and second teams, while also garnering an all-freshman team member as announced by the league office earlier today.
Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) led the group of Wildcats as she was named to the All-SoCon First Team for the third straight year, becoming the fifth player in program history to garner first-team honors three times. The last Wildcat to accomplish the feat was defender Nancy Haskell (2005-07). Kelly Ammann (1994-96), Tara Maloney (1999, 2001-02) and Kara Koehrn (2003-05) were the other players to be three-time first-team members during their Wildcat careers.
Courtney Hart (Ashland, Mass.) made it two years in a row with a nod on the second team, while fellow senior Blakely Low (San Antonio, Texas) and junior defender Amanda Flink (Richardson, Texas) joined Hart on the second team. Making the All-SoCon Freshman team was defender Louise Timboe (Littleton, Colo.), who has started 19 of the Wildcats' 20 games in the backfield.
The last Wildcat team to place at least four players on either all-conference teams was the 2007 squad.
Bye-Nagel is closing her career out with another outstanding campaign as the striker paces the team in goals (8), assists (4) and points (20). It's the third straight season she has hit the 20-point mark, while she is just one goal away from reaching the top-five in the Davidson record books for her career (29 career goals). The senior, who has amassed 66 career points, is the lone 'Cat to start all 20 games this season and has seen her name in the starting lineup 56 times for her career.
Hart has been one of the Wildcats' steadiest workers during her four-year career. The junior midfielder has started 17 games this season, and has had her named etched in starting lineup 63 of her 74 games played. This year, Hart has registered a goal and two assists, with both assists coming in a 4-2 win at Chattanooga, Oct. 23. Her lone goal this season helped lead Davidson to a 2-1 home win over rival UNC Greensboro to start the month of October.
Low has been Davidson's other counterpart on offense, joining Bye-Nagel to form a solid offensive force that has led the team to 32 goals on the year, tied for tops in the SoCon. She is second on the team in goals (7) and points (16), registering career bests in both categories. Low recorded her third career multi-goal game,Oct. 16, when she netted two of the 'Cats four goals in a 4-0 win over Wofford. The game prior to that, the senior kicked in the game-winner at The Citadel to give her five during her Wildcat career.
Low has started 17 of 19 games this season, and played in a total of 77 contests. For her career, Low has recorded totals of 18 goals, six assists and 42 points.
One of the Wildcats' main defensive players since her freshman season, Flink again is have a nice junior campaign. She has netted her seventh and eighth career goals to open the 2009 campaign, while seeing her name in the starting lineup 19 times. Flink has started all but four of the 59 games she has played in.
Flink along with Timboe in the backfield has helped lead Davidson to six shutouts on the season, including four during a stretch from Oct. 4-18 when the Wildcats earned wins over Elon, The Citadel, Wofford and Furman.
UNC Greensboro and Samford each earned four first-team all-conference selections in balloting conducted by the league's head coaches. UNCG freshman forward Tabitha Padgett and Samford senior forward Amber Cress were named Co-Players of the Year. The Citadel's Bob Winch was named the league's Coach of the Year, while Padgett was also named Freshman of the Year.
Davidson, coming off a 7-1-1 month of October that helped guide it into the league tournament, will face No. 1-seeded UNCG this Friday at 7:30 in the semifinals in Greensboro, N.C. College of Charleston, seeded second, will take on No. 3 seed Samford in the opening semifinal game at 5 p.m.
