Davidson Sends Two to Semifinals at Va. Tech W. Tennis Invite

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The duo of Teresa Wang (Charlotte, N.C.) and Ali Gores (Charlotte, N.C.) each reached the semifinals in the 'C' Singles bracket, with Gores making the finals, while three other Wildcats competed over the weekend at the 16th annual Virginia Tech Hokie Fall Tennis Invitational, Oct. 2-4.

Playing its third fall event of the year, the Davidson women's tennis team also had senior Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.), and sophomores Stephani Synn (Conover, N.C.) and Katharine Dicconson (Pacific Grove, Calif.) each participate in both singles and doubles.

Wang's weekend started off with back-to-back wins as she scored a 6-4, 6-4 victory over a player from Appalachian State, and then took another straight-set match (6-3, 6-3) over Sarah Tegner of Radford. In semis, she fell by the count of 6-1, 6-2, before then closing out the invite with a tie-breaker loss to Kara Kucin of Marshall. The two players had split their first two matches, 6-2, 3-6, to force the tie breaker.

Like Wang, Gores was also successful in her first two matches in the main 'C' singles draw, scoring 6-4, 7-5 and 6-1, 6-1 triumphs to reach the semifinals. She then scored a thrilling three-set win by taking a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 decision to reach the finals of the draw. There, she faced Kara Kucin, who earlier had defeated Wang, and came up short in trying to not only avenge her teammates loss to Kucin, but also capture the 'C' singles title as she fell 6-3, 6-1 in the finals.

Synn regrouped after dropping her first singles match of the weekend in the main 'B' singles draw by reaching the finals on the consolation side. The sophomore netted a 6-2, 7-5 win over Laura Porras of Tennessee Tech, then took another straight-set win, this time a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Caroline Mauch of ASU. In the consolation finals, she dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to a player from Winthrop.

Playing in the top singles bracket, Berry lost her first two matches, but nearly came up with a win in her final match of the weekend. She dropped her first set 6-4, but forced a tie breaker in the second set before falling in the end, 7-6 (7).

Rounding out the Wildcats' singles players was Dicconson, who finished out the invite with a win when her player she was playing retired after Dicconson led 3-1.

Davidson also had two teams participate in the two doubles brackets, with Berry teaming up with Synn in the top bracket, while Gores and Wang competed in the 'B' draw. Berry and Synn lost their first two, but came back to close out the weekend with an 8-3 win over a team from Appalachian State.

As for Gores and Wang, the tandem started off with a shutout win, 8-0, over players from East Tennessee State. They then faced a tough Virginia Tech team, falling 8-2, before then closing out the weekend with a nice 8-1 triumph.

Dicconson also competed in doubles play, teaming up with a player from Winthrop and finished 2-1, earning 8-5, and 8-4 wins.

Davidson takes a week off before it gears up for its own fall tournament when the Wildcats host the Davidson Invitational, Oct. 16-17.
