DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson wrestling team will host the 2010 Southern Conference Championship on Saturday, March 6 as part of a challenging 2009-10 season schedule announced by head wrestling coach Bob Patnesky.
“We are extremely excited to be hosting the Southern Conference tournament here at Davidson for the first time since 1988,” said Patnesky. “Our setup at the Baker Sports Complex will make it a great environment for wrestling. We're looking forward to having our fans and alumni here supporting the Wildcats.”
In 19 competitions prior to the SoCon Championship, the Wildcats will compete in four individual tournaments, the two-day Virginia Duals and 14 dual meets. Davidson will host the Davidson Open on Saturday, Dec. 5, and seven dual matches throughout the season.
“We tried to balance the schedule to meet the new qualification rules for the NCAA tournament,” said Patnesky. “We will test ourselves against the top competition in the country while continuing to face our traditional rivals.”
The 2009-10 season will begin for the 'Cats on Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Hokie Open, hosted by Virginia Tech. Davidson will return to action the following week at the Pembroke Open (Nov. 14) before making their lone trip outside the states of North Carolina and Virginia for the Sprawl & Brawl, hosted by Binghamton University in Binghamton, N.Y., on Nov. 22.
“The Sprawl & Brawl will be a big challenge for us since we will be facing some nationally ranked teams,” said Patnesky. “It will be a great learning experience to compete in a big environment like that, and we should benefit from it throughout the rest of the season.”
In December, the 'Cats will look to avenge last year's defeat at home to Duke. Davidson will travel to Durham, N.C. this year to face the Blue Devils in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Wednesday, Dec. 2.
After hosting the Davidson Open, the winners of the last five SoCon Championships, Chattanooga, will visit Baker Sports Complex for the 'Cats first conference match of the season (Dec. 18).
The Wildcats will then participate in the Virginia Duals, the largest high school and college wrestling tournament in the world, in their first match of the new year (Jan. 9-10).
The 'Cats will host a pair of dual matches on Jan. 16 as both Gardner-Webb and Franklin & Marshall will visit the Baker Sports Complex. Davidson will travel to Lexington, Va. to face the Virginia Military Institute in their second conference match of the season (Jan. 22), and will follow with a match against Millersville the same day.
The next three matches will all be against conference opponents, as the 'Cats will travel to UNC Greensboro (Jan. 27), host The Citadel (Feb. 4) and travel to Appalachian State (Feb. 9).
Davidson will close the regular season with five non-conference matches. The 'Cats will host Anderson and Belmont Abbey on Feb. 12, face both Campbell and N.C. State in Buies Creek, N.C. on Feb. 16, and conclude with a match against Duquesne in Baker on Feb. 18.
Live video of all of the home matches will be available on DavidsonWildcats.com.
