DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Pioneer Football League has named Davidson senior Alex Griswold its Defensive Player of the Week following his performance in the Wildcats' 16-10 victory over Morehead State Saturday.
Griswold had two sacks, three tackles for loss and two forced fumbles against the Eagles. The defensive lineman collected six total tackles, including five solo, and added a pass breakup. He led a Wildcat defense that allowed just 59 rushing yards and 185 yards of total offense.
It was the least rushing yards Davidson has allowed since the 'Cats gave up minus-40 yards in a 24-21 home victory over Drake in 2007. The 'Cats also had five fumble recoveries against Morehead State, the most in a game since the school began tracking the record in 1998.
Griswold is tied for third on the team with 27 tackles and leads the squad with eight tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. The forced fumbles are already the most in a season since Mark Wilkerson had four in 2003.
Griswold now has 20 career tackles for loss and 10 sacks to go along with five forced fumbles. He is the first Davidson player to win PFL Defensive Player of the Week since classmate Daniel Hauffe earned the honor Sept. 13, 2008.
The Wildcats return to action at PFL opponent Dayton Saturday in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
