DAVIDSON, N.C. – After going undefeated in all of his matches last week, Davidson wrestler Ben Altman has been tabbed the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of January 12, the conference office announced today. This is the second such award for his career, after he was named Student-Athlete of the Week on Feb. 22, 2008.
Altman, a 125-pounder for the Wildcats, sports a 3.81 GPA in mathematics, was named to the Academic All-SoCon team last season after winning the 2007 SoCon Freshman of the Year award.
Last week the junior won all three of his matches at the Gardner-Webb Bulldog Duals, including a 17-2 technical fall victory against Schuyler Swanton of Virginia Tech. Altman also scored a forfeit victory in helping Davidson to a 21-15 victory over national power Lock Haven, and started each of the team's three matches with points, the only player to accomplish that feat on the weekend.
The Wilmington, Del. native is now 14-9 on the season and leads the team in victories, while posting a 5-5 record in dual matches. He has recorded 20 points for the Wildcats, second-highest on the squad.
Altman joins Wildcat volleyball player Sarabeth Peele as the two Davidson student-athletes to win the conference honor this academic year. Peele was named Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 10, 2008.
The Wildcats will begin a stretch of four consecutive dual meets this Saturday, Jan. 17, when they take on North Carolina in a neutral site matchup at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C.
