SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Making a statement in their 2008 season-opener, the Wildcat men's cross country team finished third out of the 22 teams in the Division I at the Eye Opener, hosted by USC Upstate University in Spartanburg Saturday morning.
Junior Tom Divinnie finished second overall with a time of 25:35 on the 8K course, just ahead of classmate Alex Hoyt who was third in the division and fourth overall with a time of 26:09. Both runners were named to the All-Invitational team for finishing in the Top 10.
Junior Peter Bruton finished 13th with a time of 26:35, while freshman Ryan Hopkins was 18th (26:48) and classmate Ian Tupper was 23rd (26:57) to round out the scoring for the Wildcat men.
"The race was a great start to our season," head coach Gary Andrew said. "Lots of good things occurred. The guys were focused and raced well. Going into the meet, we needed to establish that we are a championship-caliber team, and we did so today. Now, we must be consistent with that effort and keep improving. My hats off to Elon. They've really improved. We'll be out to beat them when we next race."
The Clemson Tigers completed the sweep of the event, finishing first on the men's side with just 45 points, just edging the Southern Conference's Elon, who amassed 46 points. Davidson finished third with 59 points, ahead of Furman (73), Greensboro (73) and The Citadel (205). USC Upstate (220), the College of Charleston (230), Wofford (235) and Presbyterian (303) complete the Top 10.
The Wildcats will take a weekend off before traveling the short distance to the Winthrop Invitational on Sept. 20.
