ROCK HILL, S.C. - Junior Tom Divinnie brought home a fifth-place finish to help the Davidson cross country team take fourth place out of 14 teams overall at the Asics/Winthrop Invitational Saturday afternoon in Rock Hill. S.C.
Divinnie traversed the 8K course in a career-best time of 25:13 on his way to his top-five placing, in a race where just three seconds separated the third through fifth-place finishers. It was his second consecutive top-five placing on the year, after a runner-up performance at the Eye Opener meet on Sept. 6.
He was followed by junior Alex Hoyt, whose time of 26:12 was good for 24th, and freshman Ryan Hopkins, who ran a career-best 26:16 and finished 27th. Senior Thad Sieracki finished 33rd (26:38), and junior Peter Bruton came in 37th (26:50) to round out the scoring for the Wildcats.
Davidson amassed 126 points as a team for their fourth-place result. Coming in just ahead of the 'Cats were meet winners Louisville, who completed the sweep of both the men's and women's titles with 23 points, and Southern Conference rivals Appalachian State (41 points), and Elon (113), who came in second and third place, respectively. Other SoCon teams competing in the Gold Division included UNC Greensboro, who rounded out the top five with 137 points, and tenth-place Wofford (319).
The 'Cats will have a few weeks off before they head to Louisville, Ky. to take on some of the nation's top teams in the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic on Oct. 4.
