DAVIDSON, N.C. - After jumping out to an early one-goal lead, the Davidson field hockey team was unable to hold off a rally by Longwood and lost for the first time at home this season, 2-1, on a picturesque fall afternoon at Belk Turf Field.
Davidson struck first in the game at the 25-minute mark when senior Lauren Calve collected a loose ball off a defected shot and passed it to classmate Tyler Kirkland, who moved around the crowd in front of the goal, then fired a shot from the left side into the back of the net. It was Kirkland's second goal of the season, and moves her into a tie for the top spot on the team in goals and points, with six. Calve's assist was her second of the year.
Longwood answered just under a minute later when Carra Bunner took a shot from the top of the circle on a set play off a penalty corner, putting the ball just under the Davidson defense and into the goal. The Lancers then took the lead at the 29:51 mark courtesy of a rebound shot by Carla Binnewies that found the goal on the lower right-hand corner.
The Wildcats tried to claw back in the second half, and had a pair of close calls that just missed scoring the equalizer. Halfway through the second frame, Davidson had a breakaway going toward the goal, but were unable to capitalize when senior Britti Himelfarb was tripped up by the Lancer goalkeeper before she coul get off a clean shot. With just over five minutes remaining, Calve found herself with an open shot that was deflected by the Longwood defense and went just wide of the goal.
Himelfarb and Calve both took one shot in the game for the 'Cats. Fellow senior Brittany Rollek, making her second appearance of the year, recorded five shots in goal, tying her season-high.
The Lancers out-shot Davidson 11-3 on the game, and held a 7-1 advantage on penalty corners.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 2-5 on the year, and 2-1 at home. Longwood's third consecutive win improves their record to an even 4-4.
Davidson will return to action on Sunday afternoon when they take on No. 1 Wake Forest at Belk Field. The 45th all-time meeting between the two schools is scheduled for 3 p.m.
