DAVIDSON, N.C. — After leading the Davidson women's soccer team to an unbeaten record in first two weeks of the season, junior forward Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) was honored with the Southern Conference's first women's soccer Player of the Week award as voted on by the league's sports information directors today.
It's Bye-Nagel's third career player of the week honor after she garnered the award twice last season on her way to being named to the All-SoCon First Team.
The junior led Davidson to a 2-0-1 mark to start the season by scoring two goals, including the game-winner in a1-0 victory at Mercer on Aug. 29. Bye-Nagel started all three contests and placed five of her eight shots on goal, including the two that found the back of the net.
Bye-Nagel picked up right where she left off from a breakout sophomore campaign when she started this year by scoring her 13th career goal in the Wildcats' season-opening 2-1 triumph over visiting Virginia Tech, Aug. 23.
Following that win, the forward helped Davidson get off to a solid start on the first day of the LQ Cup this past weekend. In the 53rd minute, Bye-Nagel broke up a 0-0 tie with a header to the near-post off a great cross from her classmate, Suzanne Sittko (Greenwood Village, Colo.), to score her second goal in as many games. The goal proved to be the game-winner as Davidson held on for the 1-0 win.
With her two goals in the first three games of the season, Bye-Nagel has scored nine goals in her past nine games dating back to last year.
Coming off a 1-0-1 weekend at the LQ Cup, Davidson will host its own tournament this weekend when it welcomes College of Charleston, Lehigh and Richmond for the adidas Classic, Sept. 5-7.
The Wildcats open the tournament against Lehigh on Friday evening at 7 p.m., and then close out the classic with a 3 p.m. contest against Richmond on Sunday. College of Charleston and Richmond play each other in the first game (4:30 p.m.) on Friday and then the Cougars will play Lehigh on Sunday (1 p.m.).
