FLORENCE, S.C. - After waiting to finish their second round due to weather delays, the Davidson men's golf team sits in seventh place overall at the season-opening Raines Development Group Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event is being held at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C.
The Wildcats followed up their opening-round team score of 292 with a two-over 290 on Tuesday to go into the final round at six-over, with a combined score of 582.
Senior Michael Saari sits in sixth place individually to lead the Davidson contingent. The Lilburn, Ga., native fired a second-round 69 to follow up his opening 71 for a combined four-under 140, just five shots off the lead. Saari also is in second-place among all players in par four scoring, averaging 3.80 strokes per hole.
Other Davidson competitors included Jackson Taylor, who is tied for 24th place in the first tournament of his collegiate career with a one-over two-round score of 145, Bobby Urso (147/T-32), Adam Lewicki (153/T-72) and Christopher Rollins (159/T-87).
Fellow Southern Conference member Georgia Southern leads all teams with a combined team score of 558, 18-under par. Georgia College &?State University are the closest competitors, having posted a two-round 574.
The 'Cats are ahead of the six other SoCon teams in the tournament, trailing only GSU and Furman overall. Western Carolina's Andres Cuenca fired back-to-back sub-68 rounds to lead the individuals with a combined score of 135, nine-under par. Six players, including Davidson's Saari, are within five shots of the top spot.
Second-round play was suspended Monday night after rain and lightning moved through the area. Four teams had completed their second round, but the 14 other squads were ushered from the course with anywhere from one to three holes left to play. The round was completed Tuesday morning, followed by a shotgun start to the third round, which is currently underway.
