2008 Schedule
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Coming off a school-record tying 14 wins and a trip to the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament, the Davidson Wildcat women's soccer team will be seeking its fourth SoCon title in program history with the release of the 2008 schedule as announced by head coach Greg Ashton.
The Wildcats campaign will feature two in-season tournaments, including one held by the Wildcats at Alumni Stadium, along with home games against Virginia Tech and UNC Wilmington, and a trip to Harvard. They also play host to Charlotte to open the preseason, Aug. 17.
“We have tried once again to schedule opponents in the non-conference phase of our season that will test our team and put us in situations that can help prepare us for a run at another conference title,” said head coach Greg Ashton, who sports a 51-26-6 mark in his four years at Davidson. “We expect to be physically challenged by some very talented teams, which will also help to strengthen the mental side of our play.”
Davidson is coming off another strong season that saw it go 14-5-1 in 2007 and finish second in regular-season league play with an 8-1-1 record. The 'Cats start their quest in 2008 with a home game against Atlantic Coast Conference member Virginia Tech on Aug. 23. It marks the seventh time the two schools have faced each other with the last meeting coming in 2002 and Davidson scoring a 2-1 overtime win.
Next up the Wildcats will play the first of back-to-back in-season tournaments when they travel to Macon, Ga., to participate in the LQ Cup, hosted by Mercer. The two-day tournament features games against Mercer and Kennesaw State. The 'Cats then open up the month of September with their own tournament as they match up against Lehigh on Sept. 5 and then close with Richmond on Sept. 7. The tournament marks the first time Davidson has held its own in-season tournament since the 1991 campaign. The Wildcats have never faced Lehigh and last played the Spiders in 1998 when Richmond won 2-0.
Following its own tournament, Davidson hits the road for its next two games with stops at Harvard and Providence College, Sept. 12 and 14. The game against Harvard will be just the third time the Wildcats have played the Ivy League school, with the last contest coming in 2000. The Crimson finished 10-6-1 last year, earning its first 10-win season since the 2001 campaign.
The Wildcats finish out their non-conference slate of games with a matchup against UNC Wilmington at home, Sept. 21. Last year the two teams played an exhibition game at Alumni Stadium as the Seahawks took a 2-0 decision.
Davidson, who returns nine starters from last year's squad, will start its quest for its fourth regular-season and championship titles when it hits the road on Sept. 25 and 28 to open league play at Furman and Wofford. Furman returns six starters from last year's team who claimed the SoCon tournament title and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in the past eight seasons. The Wildcats own a five-game unbeaten streak against Wofford after earning a tie with the Terriers in the regular-season and then taking a 2-1 decision in the quarterfinals of the league tournament.
Following the two road contests, five of the Wildcats' next six league games are at home where they went 8-2-0 last season and have gone 25-6-3 overall during the past four years. Coming to Alumni Stadium for the first time will be Samford (Oct. 3), who is in its first year in the SoCon. The Bulldogs finished the 2007 campaign with a 15-4-1 overall record and earned their first at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament in school history. It marked the second in three years they have made the tournament.
After hosting The Citadel (Oct. 12), Appalachian State (Oct. 16) and Western Carolina (Oct. 19), Davidson will close out the regular season with three straight league road contests. The 'Cats finish out the season at Elon on Oct. 23, then travel to UNC Greensboro on Oct. 26, before closing out October with a trip to Statesboro, Ga., on the 30th for a contest against Georgia Southern. Davidson is looking to turn around its misfortunes over the years against the Spartans of Greensboro as the Wildcats have won only three times in their 22-game series dating back to 1989. The 'Cats have handled both Elon and Georgia Southern though, winning a combined 24 of the 37 matches against both schools.
The 2008 SoCon tournament will begin with the first round to be held at campus sites, Nov. 2. The semifinals and championship will be held Nov. 7 and 9 in Charleston, S.C., as the College of Charleston will be the host this year.
Since 1994, the first year the Wildcats were members of the SoCon, Davidson has gone 14-10 in the conference tournament and taken home the championship title three times — 1994, '95 and '96.
