MACON, Ga. – The Davidson women's soccer team kept their unbeaten streak to start the season alive with a second-half goal and battled through two overtimes before playing to a 1-1 draw with Kennesaw State on Sunday, Aug. 31 in the final day of the LQ Cup hosted by Mercer.
The Wildcats and Owls ran their records to start the 2008 campaign to 2-0-1. Both teams scored wins on the opening night of the tournament, Davidson taking a 1-0 victory over Mercer, while Kennesaw State, who was awarded this year's LQ Cup, earned a 3-1 win against Jackson State.
With the tie, Davidson has either earned a tie or win in nine of its past 10 contests dating back to last Oct. 17. After going 1-0-1 this weekend, the 'Cats are also now riding a nine-game unbeaten streak when playing on the road or at neutral sites.
In a game between two schools playing each for the first time, Kennesaw State put the pressure on the Wildcat defense early by getting off seven first-half shots. The one that counted the most came at the 20:25 mark when Rachel Baer had a breakaway goal off a long ball to give the Owls a 1-0 advantage.
The one-goal deficit would be erased by the Wildcats in the 60th minute during the second half. After Davidson earned a corner kick, sophomore Allison Drutchas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) sent a high pass to just outside the six-yard box where junior Lauren Conner (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) headed the ball into the near post to knot things up at 1-1.
Four minutes later, freshman goalie Christy Carry (Dallas, Texas) recorded one of the biggest plays of the game when she stopped a penalty kick to preserve the 1-1 tie. Carry played all 120 minutes, registering a game-high seven saves.
Both teams got off three shots each in first and second overtimes, but neither squad was able to punch one through resulting in the tie.
The Owls had a 15-11 advantage in the shot column, with Davidson putting seven of its 11 shots on goal compared to eight by Kennesaw State.
The Owls' goalie Staci Pugh finished with six saves in her 120 minutes of action.
Davidson will now host its own tournament, Sept. 5-7, when Lehigh, Richmond and College of Charleston come to Alumni Stadium. The Wildcats will first play Lehigh on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m., before closing out the tournament with a 3 p.m. contest against Richmond on Sunday.
