DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson women's soccer team, fresh off a season-opening 2-1 home win over Virginia Tech last Saturday, found themselves ranked ninth in the first NSCAA/adidas Southeast Regional rankings that came out Tuesday, Aug. 26. Last season the 'Cats finished 10th in the NSCAA/adidas Regional poll after tying the school record with a 14-5-1 record.
Florida State, despite not playing last week, is ranked No. 1 followed by national powerhouses North Carolina (1-0) and Duke (1-0), which outscored their opponents by a combined 14-1 score in their games last week.
The Wildcats also found themselves ranked 11th in the first Soccer Buzz top-15 Southeast Regional rankings, which came out today.
Davidson opened the year with the program's fourth win all-time against the Hokies by netting two first-half goals and held on for its first season-opening home win since defeating Charlotte, 1-0, in 2004.
Senior Melanee Smith (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) had a hand in both goals, assisting on the first goal, scored by junior Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany), and then scoring a goal of her own off a rebound in the 38th minute of play.
The Wildcats will look to stay in the top-10 when they play the first of back-to-back in-season tournaments by heading to Macon, Ga. this weekend to participate in the LQ Cup. They first play host Mercer on Friday at 7 p.m. and then close out the tournament with a 12:30 p.m. contest against Kennesaw State, the first time the two schools have ever met. Last year Davidson earned its first win all-time against Mercer when the Wildcats defeated the Bears by the count of 3-1 at Alumni Stadium.
