DAVIDSON, N.C. – With the return of 19 letterwinners, including nine starters from last year's 14-5-1 squad, the Davidson women's soccer team was picked to finish second this year as voted on by the league coaches, Wednesday, Aug. 20. The Wildcats also placed a player on the 11-member preseason all-conference team as junior Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) earned the nod.
UNC Greensboro, which has won three of the past four Southern Conference regular season titles, was the preseason favorite to repeat again in 2008. The Spartans received 118 total points and 10 of 12 first-place votes. Davidson was next, receiving one first place vote and 101 points, while Furman followed with 101 points as well. SoCon-newcomer and 2007 NCAA Tournament participant, Samford, grabbed the fourth slot with 87 points.
College of Charleston received the other first place vote, totaling 86 points for fifth place. Western Carolina, Appalachian State, and Elon came in behind the Cougars, while Wofford, Georgia Southern, The Citadel and Chattanooga rounded out the poll.
Davidson is coming off another strong season that saw it tie the school record for wins in a single season with 14 and finish second in regular-season league play with an 8-1-1 record. The Wildcats advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament last year before falling 1-0 to eventual champion Furman. Last year also saw them win the College of Charleston tournament title with the program's first wins over Vanderbilt and LSU.
Bye-Nagel looks to carry her outstanding sophomore campaign into her third year as one of nine starters returning from last season. The junior was one of two 'Cats to garner first-team All-SoCon honors and also earned a spot on the league's all-tournament team. She led the team with career highs of 12 goals and 25 points, placing her second and third, respectively, in the SoCon in each category. Of her 12 goals, seven of them came in the final six games.
The 'Cats start their quest in 2008 with a home game against Atlantic Coast Conference member Virginia Tech, Aug. 23. Davidson then starts its quest for a fourth regular-season and championship title when it hits the road on Sept. 25 and 28 to open league play at Furman and Wofford.
