DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson football coach Tripp Merritt announced the Wildcats' 2008 schedule today. The 'Cats will play a total of 11 contests, highlighted by five home games and eight Pioneer Football League showdowns.
“We play eight games in the state of North Carolina and four of our last six at home so I'm very pleased with that,” said Merritt, who will be in his fourth season directing the program. “We have a challenging early-season schedule as we're going to have to spend the first two weeks on the road, and we have a tough out-of-conference schedule with UNCP, Lenoir-Rhyne and future PFL member Marist for the first time.”
In a slate that contains the most games since Davidson played 11 contests in 2003, the Wildcats will open the campaign with four of their first five on the road and finish the season with three straight games at the friendly confines of Richardson Stadium.
The season opens Sept. 6, when the 'Cats travel to UNC Pembroke in a rematch of last season's opener. Davidson posted a 31-21 victory in the Braves' first varsity football game since 1950. The Wildcats travel to Lenoir-Rhyne Sept. 13, to continue a series that dates back to 1910 (LR?leads 7-6) before getting a bye week prior to conference play.
The PFL?slate begins Sept. 27, with a game against Jacksonville on Homecoming at Richardson Stadium. Davidson travels to Morehead State Oct. 4, and Valparaiso Oct. 11 before hosting defending PFL Champion Dayton Oct. 18.
The 'Cats continue the conference slate by traveling to Drake Oct. 25, and Campbell Nov. 1, in the first meeting between the two schools on the gridiron. The 2008 season will be Campbell's first varsity football season since 1950, and the Camels are the newest members of the PFL.
Davidson hosts San Diego Nov. 8, and meets Marist for the first time Nov. 15, at Richardson Stadium. That will be a non-conference game this year, and the Red Foxes will join the PFL in 2009. A home league contest against Butler caps the campaign Nov. 22.
The 2008 Gridiron Classic will be played Saturday, Dec. 6, pitting the champions of the PFL and the Northeast Conference at the NEC winner's home field.
The Wildcats return 46 letterwinners and 17 starters to the 2008 team, including leading passer Ryan Alexander and their top-3 rushers in Chad Barnes, Justin Williams and Kenny Mantuo. Eight defensive starters are back as well, including three of the top-5 tacklers in Matt Easton, Peter Bakke and Kwame Som-Pimpong.
