DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson wrestling coach Bob Patnesky announced today that six student-athletes, making up the class of 2012, have committed to wrestle for the Wildcats, beginning in the 2008-09 season.
“As a staff, we are very excited about this incoming class, and we feel it is one of the strongest we have had in recent history,” said Patnesky. “These kids will help fill the voids we have on the roster. With their hard work and dedication, we feel we can compete in the very strong Southern Conference.”
Ike Crews, Dallas, Texas
Patnesky on Crews: “Ike was a 2008 National Prep All-American at the 215-pound weight class, and he will eventually add significant depth in our upper weight classes as he may be taking a year off from school to do further academic studies. Whenever Ike becomes a Wildcat, he will be a force to be dealt with in the Southern Conference.”
David DeCamp, Robbinsville, N.J.
Patnesky on DeCamp: “David will compete for the starting role at 141. He had a strong senior campaign, finishing 38-2 with 32 wins coming by fall. David is the type of kid that can be a sleeper in any match and can never be counted out. We really like the fact that he is aggressive in going for the fall, an attitude we are trying to implement within the team.”
Thomas Jasterzbski, Montville, N.J.
Patnesky on Jasterzbski: “We are looking for Thomas to come in and shake things up at the 165-pound spot. He had a tremendous career in the state of New Jersey. Thomas exemplifies the character and work ethic that we look for in all student-athletes, and we expect him to do great things for the Wildcats.”
Jorge Estrada, Carrollton, Texas
Patnesky on Estrada: “We are very excited about Jorge joining the team; his passion towards athletics and academics will make him a very successful person. He was a prep state champion in 2007 and 2008 and posted a 51-4 record as a senior. His athleticism adds versatility, which will be a huge advantage for him as he will compete for the starting role at 197 but may see time at heavyweight.”
Scott Luberto, Williamstown, N.Y.
Patnesky on Luberto: “Scott is a former New York state place winner, who will compete for the starting role at 149. A late addition to our recruiting class this season, we are very excited to have a wrestler of his caliber on this team.”
Tyler Mullen, Westminster, Maryland
Patnesky on Mullen: “Tyler will fill a great need at 174 with the graduation of Trebor Clavette. He was the 2008 Maryland state champion, and the runner-up in 2006 and 2007. He has the potential and talent to become one of the finest Davidson wrestlers, and we expect big things from him in the upcoming years.”
The Wildcats return 13 lettermen from the 2007-08 team that finished sixth at the Southern Conference Championships. Davidson ranked 11th in the country as a team with a combined grade point average of 3.082, and sophomore Ben Altman, who placed second at 125 in the SoCon Championships, was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic Team.
