
Weiss Named All-Ping! Freshman Honorable Mention

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson first baseman Danny Weiss has been named All-Freshman Honorable Mention by Ping! Baseball, it was announced this week. The publication showcases the top freshmen in the country.
Weiss was also named Davidson's George Weicker Rookie of the Year, while junior second baseman Zach Kayne was named the Fielding Clark Most Valuable Player. Sophomore Thomas Middour was named the team's Most Valuable Pitcher, while junior Brett Shore and freshman Will General earned the Rick Smyre Hustle Award.
Weiss finished the season with a .297 batting average and led the team with 14 doubles and 33 RBIs. He started 49 games, the most of any Wildcat freshman and tallied 20 runs, one triple and two home runs. He had 16 games with multiple hits and tied for the team lead with eight multiple-RBI contests.
Kayne started every game for the second consecutive season, spending time at shortstop and second base. He hit .318 with 12 doubles, two triples and a home run to go along with 28 RBIs. Kayne was second on the squad with 31 runs and ranked fifth in the league with 47 walks. He had 16 multiple-hit games and seven multiple-RBI contests and is the school's active leader in hits, runs, doubles, RBIs and walks. Kayne also made just 11 errors in 255 chances in the field.
Middour led the squad with a 5.29 ERA?and 78.1 innings pitched. He finished the campaign with a 3-4 record and led the team with 14 starts.
Shore started all 50 games and recorded a .313 batting average with a team-leading 35 runs scored. He had seven doubles and a triple to go along with his team-best 63 hits and recorded a team-high 20 multiple-hit games. General saw action in seven games and went 1-for-6 from the plate with a double and three RBIs.
The Wildcats return 25 letterwinners and eight starting fielders to the 2009 team. Davidson also returns two of its three weekend starting pitchers and the top six hurlers out of the bullpen.
