HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Southern Conference handed out three long-standing awards for athletic and academic achievement this week with Davidson College picking up the Graduation Rate Award for the eighth straight year at the conference's annual Honors Dinner, May 28.
Davidson has claimed the Graduation Rate Award for the last eight years, sharing the honor with Wofford in 1999-00. The SoCon awarded its initial Graduation Rate Award at its 1994 spring meeting. The award is presented to the member institution with the highest graduation rate for its student-athletes over the past five years as recorded in the annual NCAA Graduation Rates Report.
The other two prestigious awards, the Barrett-Bonner and D.S. McAlister, were given to Furman and The Citadel. The Barrett-Bonner Award is given to the school who has the highest percentage of its student-athletes on the league's academic honor roll. Inaugurated in 1980, the D.S. McAlister Award is presented annually to the SoCon school judged to have the highest degree of sportsmanship in the conduct of its athletic program.
The conference also announced the final standings of the Commissioner's Cup and the Germann Cup, with the Davidson men's sports teams finishing fourth in the Commissioner's Cup and the women's sports teams coming in seventh in the Germann Cup.
Appalachian State claimed the Commissioner's Cup title for the third consecutive season and the 28th time overall in the past 31 years. On the women's side, Chattanooga won the 2007-08 Germann Cup for the first time in school history.
The Commissioner's and Germann Cups are awarded annually to the SoCon schools fielding the league's best all-around men's and women's sports programs. Schools earn points based upon its regular season finish, with two bonus points going to the team that wins the conference tournament.
