DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson College juniors Mercedes Robinson (Baltimore, Md.) and Cameron Griffin (Pittsburgh, Pa.) recently were named two of 21 student-athletes that were recipients of the third annual Coleman Lew Award as announced by the Coleman Lew & Associates, Inc., a national executive search firm, and the Southern Conference. Recipients were recognized at the SoCon Honors Dinner on May 28.
The award recognizes scholar-athletes from each of the SoCon's 11-member institutions. Coaches, faculty athletic representatives and senior woman administrators nominate prospective candidates based on leadership, academic excellence and athletic achievement in both the college environment and the community. Athletic directors and representatives from Coleman Lew & Associates conducted one-on-one interviews with the finalists before determining the award recipients.
Robinson had a outstanding junior campaign, leading the Wildcat women's basketball team to a 19-11 overall record by averaging team and career bests of 12.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest. She ranked among the top-five players in the SoCon in points (3rd), rebounds (3rd) and field goal percentage (2nd/53.1).
The junior forward had a league-leading 14 double doubles and recorded 11 of them against SoCon opponents. Robinson closed out the regular season with back-to-back double doubles in wins over Georgia Southern and College of Charleston to earn league player of the week honors, the first of her career.
The junior was awarded for her breakout season by garnering All-SoCon First Team honors on both the coaches' and media teams, while also earning a spot on the first team of the NCCSIA All-State women's basketball squad.
Griffin, a member of Davidson's men's soccer team, started a career-high 16 of his 17 games this past fall. One of two captains on the team this year and a three-year letterwinner, the junior defender earned his first career assist and was one of 11 'Cats in all to register at least one or more assists on the year.
