DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson sophomore wrestler Ben Altman has been named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic Team. The Wildcats ranked 11th in the country as a team with a combined grade point average of 3.082.
Altman, a sophomore from Wilmington, Del., had a 3.76 grade point average and is majoring in mathematics. He posted a 24-11 record with three pins and placed second at 125 pounds in the Southern Conference Championships. Altman was named Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week Dec. 5 and Feb. 20.
“Ben exemplifies all the great qualities of a student-athlete,” said Davidson coach Bob Patnesky. “He has an extremely bright future on the mat in competing to become a conference champion and certainly excels academically.”
It's the third straight year that the Wildcats have made the top-30 as a team. Davidson was 11th in 2007 and 25th in 2006.
Individually, wrestlers must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule and must have competed in at least 60 percent of said schedule. A wrestler may also qualify for the All-Academic team with a 3.0 cumulative having been named an NCAA All-American.
For a team to be eligible for consideration, it comprises 12 student-athletes, including the 10 wrestlers that were the entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. If teams had less than 10 entries for their respective qualifier, they may fill those spots with wrestlers that competed in at least one varsity dual during the season.
