CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Senior team captain Brenna Burns capped off her SoCon career with a second individual title to help the Wildcat women score a program-best 45 points at the 2008 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, concluding on the campus of Western Carolina Sunday afternoon.
Just a day after claiming the individual title in the 10,000 meters, Burns won the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:40.14.
Classmate Megal Atias, winner of the 3,000-meter steeplechase yesterday in a new school-record time, finished third in the event with a time of 18:02.57.
Both runners earned double All-SoCon honors for finishing in the top three in both events, and both qualified for the NCAA regionals with their performances.
Junior Kennesia Martin finished eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 37 feet 8 3/4 inches (11.50 meters) to score points for the Wildcats.
In the relays, the 'Cats finished fourth in the 4x400 with a time of 4:00.68 and fifth in the 4x100 with a time of 51.50.
"I am absolutely thrilled with our performance at SoCons this year!" women's head track coach Jen Straub said. "We scored the most points in our program's history, and that is an awesome accomplishment for our girls! The team put together a great meet, and Brenna and Megal were especially great today."
The Wildcat women will return to action, traveling to Durham for the Duke Twilight on May 4.
