
Jones, Funderburg Lead Wildcat Men to Fourth-Place Showing at SoCon Championships

CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Senior Beaux Jones earned All-SoCon honors with a third-place finish in the javelin, as the Wildcat men concluded the 2008 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the campus of Western Carolina Sunday afternoon.
Jones finished third in the javelin with a throw of 174 feet 11 inches (53.31 meters) to earn All-Conference honors.
Also earning All-SoCon honors for a runner-up finish in the discus yesterday, junior Will Funderburg had another strong performance on Sunday, finishing fourth in the shot put with a throw of 48 feet 2 inches (14.68 meters).
With 38 points scored, the Wildcats finished in fourth place.
In the relays, the Wildcats finished third in the 4x100 with a time of 43.99 and fourth in the 4x400 with a time of 3:24.26. Bryce Jones, Kwame Som-Pimpong, Will Ames and Ethan Dunn earned All-SoCon honors for their third-place finish in the 4x100 relay.
After qualifying in yesterday's preliminaries for a spot in the finals, senior Brad Troxell finished eighth in the 400 meters (51.21).
In the middle distance and distance events, sophomore Peter Bruton and junior Alex Hoyt had notable performances. Bruton finished fourth in the 1500 meters (4:02.99), and Hoyt was 10th in the 5,000 meters (15:29.79).
The Wildcat men will return to action, traveling to Durham for the Duke Twilight on May 4.
