CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Seniors Brenna Burns and Megal Atias each won individual events to lead the Wildcat women as competition opened at the 2008 Men's and Women's Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Cullowhee, N.C. Saturday afternoon.
Atias finished first in the steeplechase and set a new school record with a time of 11:10.01.
Burns won the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:56.24. Junior Emily King placed eighth and scored in the event, finishing with a time of 39:49.22.
"I'm so proud of our team today!" head women's track coach Jen Straub said. "Our seniors really came through, especially Megal and Brenna winning their events. I could not be more pleased with the results on day one!"
Appalachian State's men's and women's teams lead after the first day of competition, which wraps up tomorrow evening.
