ST. LOUIS – The Pioneer Football League announced today that Davidson wide receiver Myles Potter, cornerback Patrick FitzGerald and punter Kirk Konert have been named first-team Academic All-PFL.
Offensive tackle George Zoeckler and linebacker Bud Crawford were named second-team Academic All-PFL, while an additional 33 Wildcats were named to the league's Academic Honor Roll.
Potter and FitzGerald were both named first-team ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District and to the Athletic Director's Association Academic All-Star Team. FitzGerald, who owns a 3.42 grade point average in history, had 56 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and nine pass break-ups in 2008. His 11 career interceptions ranked third among active players in the Pioneer Football League, and he started 31 career games, including the last 30.
Potter, who has a 3.58 grade point average in chemistry, played in all 10 games and had 28 receptions for 394 yards and two touchdowns. The junior's 67-yard touchdown reception against Morehead State Oct. 6, was the longest for Davidson since 2005. He logged three tackles on special teams, forcing a fumble and recovering another.
Konert, who has a 3.45 grade point average in economics, played in eight games and spent time as a wide receiver, punter and return specialist. He caught 27 passes for 438 yards, the second-most on the team, averaged 38.2 yards a kick, placing six inside the 20-yard line, and averaged 23 yards in 18 kick returns.
Zoeckler, who was a first-team All-PFL selection and earned Sports Network second-team Mid-Major All-America accolades, started all 10 games and helped the 'Cats finish third in NCAA FCS in sacks allowed as Davidson gave up seven in 393 pass attempts. The Wildcats rushed for 1,221 yards and 17 touchdowns as a team. Zoeckler has a 3.39 grade point average in economics.
A second-team All-PFL selection, Crawford started all 10 games and logged 42 tackles (32 solo), leading the team with 9.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. The senior also recorded an interception, forced two fumbles and blocked a kick. He has a 3.35 grade point average in economics.
Pioneer Football League athletic directors established the Academic All-PFL squads in 1993 as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his career. No athlete is eligible until he has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his institution.
