CLEMSON, S.C. — Junior Alex Hoyt set a new school record in the 3,000 meters to help the Wildcat men's track and field team to a fifth-place finish at the 2008 Indoor Southern Conference Championships, concluding on the campus of Clemson University on Saturday afternoon.
Hoyt finished fifth in the event in a school-record time of 8:35.69, besting Lance Harden's time from a season ago of 8:36.70. Classmate Thad Sieracki finished seventh in the event with a time of 8:36.55.
Hoyt also had the team's top time in the mile, finishing sixth in 4:18.08, while Sieracki placed fifth in a team-best 15:07.68 in the 5,000 meters.
The Wildcat 4x400 relay team of Brad Troxell, Mordecai Scott, Quin Patton and Will Ames in a time of 3:28.74 and earned All-SoCon honors for finishing in the top three.
Junior Kwame Som-Pimpong finished in a Davidson Top 10-performance time of 7.19 in the 60 meters and placed sixth in the triple jump with another Davidson Top-10 performance of 13.89 meters.
Will Funderburg also had a Davidson Top-10 performance with a throw of 14.19 meters in the weight throw, and Thad Sieracki finished fifth in the 5,000 meters (15:07.68) and 7th in the 3,000 meters (8:36.55) with a pair of Top-10 performances.
Western Carolina's men's and women's track and field teams captured the team titles at the 2008 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Clemson University Indoor Track Facility on Saturday afternoon.
Western Carolina scored 263 points and slipped past Appalachian State by seven and a half points as the Mountaineers scored 256.50 to finish second. Chattanooga (47) points followed by The Citadel (38.50), Davidson (26), Furman (15) and UNC Greensboro (8).
