DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson baseball team will play host to Niagara University in a three-game series at Wilson Field this weekend. Action kicks off at 1 p.m. Saturday with a doubleheader. Sunday's single game begins at noon.
Senior Zac Long (RHP, 1-0, 5.40 ERA) is scheduled to throw game one for the Wildcats, followed by freshman Andy Bass (RHP, 0-1, 18.00 ERA). Sophomore Thomas Middour (LHP, 1-0, 3.60 ERA) is slated to start Sunday's contest.
Niagara will counter with senior Mark Wilson (RHP), junior Dan Morari (LHP) and sophomore Marcus Spaulding (RHP).
Davidson enters the weekend with a 2-3 record, while the Purple Eagles will be playing their first games of 2008. Niagara posted a 15-32 overall record in 2007 and finished ninth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with a 3-21 mark. Twenty-four lettermen, including 14 pitchers, are back from that team.
The Wildcats are coming off a 14-10 home setback to Virginia Tech Wednesday. Junior Chase FitzPatrick is leading Davidson from the plate with a .476 batting average with three doubles, a homer and five RBIs. Freshman Danny Weiss is hitting .467 with two doubles and six RBIs, while sophomore Jay Honeycutt is hitting .400 with a double, three home runs and seven RBIs.
Offensively, senior Tim Alberts is the top returner for Niagara after hitting .379 with 11 doubles, eight home runs and 42 RBIs in 2007. Sophomore Jason Cramer hit .302 and stole 16 bases. Wilson was 4-9 on the hill with 76 strikeouts in 78 innings of work.
Following the weekend, Davidson begins a stretch where the Wildcats play six games in seven days with a 6 p.m. contest at Auburn March 4.
