DAVIDSON, N.C. -- American's Leslie Fischer scored the game-winning goal with 54 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to lift the Eagles to an 11-10 win over the Davidson Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
Sophomore Jen Crawford scored four goals for the Wildcats (1-2), and classmate Haley Cook and senior Emily Palmer added a pair, but it wasn't enough for the win.
Jackie Lane led the Eagles (1-2) with four goals, while Caitlin Bell had a pair.
As you would expect, the two teams were nearly statiscally identical, with both teams taking 26 shots on the afternoon. Davidson took a slight edge on ground balls, 19-15, but committed more turnovers, 26-20. The 'Cats won 14 draw controls to 11 for the Eagles, and converted 5-of-9 free position shots, while American was just 2-of-6.
Brittany Finnegan put the Eagles on the scoreboard first, converting a free position shot in the 28th minute, but junior Callie Seymour evened the score at 1-1, doing the same just over a minute later.
American pulled ahead 3-1 as Kira Sonberg and Lauren Aksionoff scored for the Eagles, but Cook got her first goal on a free position shot to narrow the gap.
Jackie Lane answered for the Eagles with 22:07 remaining to play in the period, on a pass from Aksionoff, but Palmer's goal at 19:59 put the 'Cats within one.
The team's traded goals over the next few minutes. Jackie Lane scored the Eagles' fifth goal on a pass from sister Lauren Lane, and Crawford got the 'Cats fourth with 8:44 remaining in the period.
Jackie Lane netted her third goal of the day with just under five minutes to go, but the 'Cats closed out the half with back-to-back goals from senior Sarah Walter and Crawford to tie the score at six at the half.
Out of the break, Davidson continued its hot streak, getting a pair of goals from Cook and Crawford to take an 8-6 lead. The Eagles responded with a pair of scores from Bell and Jackie Lane to tie the score for the second time, but Davidson got another lift from two straight goals from Palmer and Crawford to take a 10-8 lead with 10:46 remaining in regulation.
But the 'Cats were done scoring for the day, as American got two goals with five minutes left on the clock from Bell and Allegra Formento. Davidson's Becky Horton had a few chances in the first overtime period, but Fischer's score with 54 seconds left in the second proved the game-winner.
In the third of its four-game homestand, Davidson will host Long Island on Feb. 29 at 3 p.m.
