DAVIDSON, N.C. - Matt Webb and Zach Kayne have been named preseason All-Southern Conference by Baseball America and the Southern Conference Sports Media Association (SCSMA), it was announced today.
A second-team all-conference selection by the SCSMA last season, Webb was named to the preseason team as a relief pitcher. The junior posted a 3-1 record and a 1.80 ERA in 22 appearances in 2007. He recorded eight saves and fanned 26 batters in 30 innings of work. Webb is also the Wildcats' starting shortstop and hit .279 with seven doubles, three triples, nine home runs and 44 RBIs.
Kayne started all 53 games at second base a season ago and served as Davidson's leadoff man in 40 starts. The junior hit .312 with 14 doubles, a triple, six homers and 42 RBIs. He scored 45 runs and led the team with 31 walks, and his 16-game hitting streak was the longest on the club. Kayne also made 15 appearances on the hill and struck out 10 in 16.1 innings while recording a 4.96 ERA.
Davidson was picked to finish 10th in the league by Baseball America, the SCSMA and by the league's 10 coaches. The College of Charleston is picked to win the league in all three polls with Western Carolina a close second.
The Wildcats open the 2008 campaign with a seven-game homestand, beginning Feb. 22, when Davidson hosts Radford at 4 p.m. at Wilson Field.
