DAVIDSON, N.C. — Once again this holiday season, the Davidson Wildcats Student-Athlete Advisory Council is participating in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program, collecting toys at the women's game against Charlotte on Dec. 9 and men's game against Chattanooga on Dec. 13.
Bring a new toy and receive a voucher for a free basketball game.
Davidson's SAAC will be collecting toys for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation from December 2-12, with all 21 teams competing to gather the most. The toys will be presented to the Marines at the men's basketball game vs. Chattnooga on Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. at Belk Arena.
The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a shiny new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to needy youngsters that will motivate them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders.
Toys for Tots began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. Over the 59 years of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program, Marines have distributed more than 370 million toys to more than 173 million needy children. This charitable endeavor has made U.S. Marines the unchallenged leaders in looking after needy children at Christmas. Over its 16 year life span, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation has supplemented local toy collections with more than 70.2 million toys valued at more than $387 million.
