DAVIDSON, N.C. — For the fourth time in the past five years under head coach Greg Ashton, the Davidson women's soccer team placed at least two players on the first or second teams of the Southern Conference all-league squads as juniors Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) and Courtney Hart (Ashland, Mass.) represented the Wildcats as announced at the SoCon Women's Soccer Tournament banquet on Thursday evening on the campus of College of Charleston.
Bye-Nagel earned her second straight nod on the top team after being one of two Wildcats last year to be named to the first team, while Hart got her first-ever postseason award by garnering a spot on the all-league second team.
Pacing one the top offensive units in the SoCon this year, Bye-Nagel concluded her junior campaign with team bests of nine goals and 20 points. The junior forward currently ranks fifth and sixth, respectively, in the league in each category. She started all 19 of the Wildcats' games this season, one of just four players to do so.
Bye-Nagel twice was named SoCon Player of the Week this year, pushing her career weekly award honors to four. The junior had an outstanding month of October when she scored six of her nine goals and picked up two multi-goal games in leading Davidson to a 6-3 month. After not scoring a single goal during her freshman campaign, Bye-Nagel has now tallied 21 goals the past two years, while picking up four assists for her career. She has recorded five game-winners, including two this year.
Hart has been one of the Wildcats' steadiest workers during her three-year career. The junior midfielder started all 19 games this season, and has started 46 of her 56 games played. Though Hart picked up just one goal this year, she is always a constant on the defensive and offensive side of the ball for Davidson. Her third career goal this year was a game-winner in leading the 'Cats to a 4-0 win over Appalachian State on Oct. 16. For her career, Hart has three goals and four assists for 10 points.
UNC Greensboro, which won its third straight regular-season league title, swept the Coach and Player of the Year awards. The Spartans' Katelynn Donovan was named the 2008 SoCon Women's Soccer Player of the Year, while head coach Eddie Radwanski was named the league's Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season.
UNCG placed five players on the first-team all-conference and six players were selected overall. College of Charleston and Furman was next with four players overall earning a spot on either the first or second team, while each school had one player earn a spot on the All-SoCon Freshman Team. The Paladins Martha Hall was honored with Freshman of the Year to round out the league's top annual individual awards.
Davidson's season came to an end in the first round of the SoCon Tournament when it fell 1-0 to Furman in a hard-fought match. The Wildcats wrapped up their 2008 season with a 10-6-3 overall mark, the fifth straight season they hit double digits in the win column, and an 8-3 league record.
