PHILADELPHIA, PA. - Senior Sam O'Hair brought home a runner-up finish in the 184 pound weight class and junior Ben Altman won third place at 125 to lead the Davidson wrestling team at the Keystone Classic, held Sunday on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
O'Hair was the leading point-producer on the day for the Wildcats, recording 16 points courtesy of advancing to the championship match at 184, where he lost a 7-5 decision to the No. 1 seed in the weight class. On his way through the bracket, O'Hair, who was the No. 2 seed, had three wins, including a first-round pin that took only 1:48, one of the fastest pins of the day. In his second-round contest, the Alexandria, Va. native advanced with a 13-4 major decision, then moved on through the semifinals via his 5-4 decision.
Despite dropping a 5-4 decision in his opening-round match, Altman came back with six-straight victories to sweep through the loser's bracket on his way to the third-place match at 125. Altman dominated in his run through the bracket, winning all of his matchups by at least three points, including an 18-2 technical fall victory over the No. 6 seed in the bracket. In the third-place contest, Altman exacted revenge on Payne Lint, who was the one that he had fallen to in the first round, taking a 7-4 decision to garner third place and finish his day with 12.5 points.
Junior Carl Sandercock recorded a team-high two falls on the day, with his fastest coming in 4:13 in his opening-round match, then coming back with a pin that occurred 6:05 over his first competitor in the bottom bracket. He also took a 5-2 decision in his next round, before falling 7-5 to end his day. Sandercock closed the meet with six points, third-highest on the squad.
Four other wrestlers accumulated points for the team on the day, including Tyler Mullen (2 pts), Alex Radsky (0.5 pts), Kevin Cook (0.5 pts), and Charlie Wolff (0.5 pts). As a team, the Wildcats had a total of 38 points, good for ninth place out of the teams competing in the tournament.
The host Quakers of Penn brought home the team title, recording 138.5 points to edge out the runners-up from University of Pittsburgh, who came home with 135 ponts. Fellow SoCon members Appalachian State (68.5) and Virginia Military Institute (13.5), also took part in the tournament.
Davidson will now prepare to open the December portion of their schedule when they play host to the Davidson Open on Dec. 6, at the Baker Sports Complex.
