DAVIDSON, N.C. – In their first home meet of the season, the Davidson wrestling team picked up their first victory on their way to a 1-2 finish Saturday afternoon at Belk Arena. After starting the day with a 31-6 loss to Buffalo, the Wildcats held on for a 20-18 victory over Campbell, and despite jumping out to a 13-0 lead, finished the meet with a 25-13 defeat at the hands of Duke.
Junior Ben Altman and sophomore twin brothers Alex Radsky and Vitaly Radsky led the team with their trio of 2-1 records on the day, with Alex picking up a pair of major decisions, and Vitaly recording one of two pins for Davidson, the other coming courtesy of freshman Tyler Mullen, the first of his collegiate career.
Altman started the meet for the 'Cats on a good note, garnering a 7-5 decision to give the team an early 3-0 lead. However, they were only able to garner three more points in the contest, via Vitaly's 6-2 decision at the 141-pound weight class, on the way to their 31-6 defeat to the Bulls.
Davidson then looked to rebound in their matchup with Campbell, and went up 4-3 early when Alex took an 11-0 major decision in 133, followed by freshman David Decamp's shut-out, 15-0, technical fall win at 149.
Mullen pinned his opponent in 2:14 to give the Wildcats a 15-9 lead, an advantage they would hold on to for the rest of the meet. Senior Sam O'Hair brought Davidson up to their final team tally of 20 points with a technical fall (15-0) win in the 184-pound class, to pick up the 20-18 win for the team.
In the final contest of the day against Duke, Davidson jumped out to an early 13-0 lead over the Blue Devils, with three strong performances by the opening trio of wrestlers. Altman started the scoring with a decision (7-5), the Alex Radsky posted a 14-4 major decision to give the Wildcats the 7-0 advantage. Vitaly's pin in 2:51 at the 141-pound class was the team's last victory in the meet, with Duke taking the last seven matchups on their way to the 25-13 win.
The Wildcats will now head up to Philadelphia, Pa. to compete in the Keystone Classic on Nov. 23, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
