CHARLESTON, S.C. -- In the first of a two-match weekend road swing, the College of Charleston Cougars bested the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team, 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-21), in SoCon volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at John Kresse Arena.

With the loss, the Wildcats drop to 5-11 overall and 1-3 in the conference, while Charleston improves to 11-5 and a perfect 4-0 in league play.

Sophomore outside hitter Sarabeth Peele led the Wildcats with 10 kills, seven digs and a pair of blocks. Senior middle blocker Kittery Neale added nine kills, hitting a match-high .571, and seven digs, while freshman Madison Benedict totaled four blocks and five kills.

For the Cougars, Emily Sawin posted 11 kills and Elyse Chubbs and Ginny Phillips each had eight kills. On the defensive end, Emily Shelton had a match-high 11 digs.

Trailing 9-6 in the first set, the Wildcats won three straight points on kills from Neale, Benedict and Peele to tie the score. The Cougars got a little distance with back-to-back kills from Sawin to take a 14-11 lead to seemingly take control, but the Wildcats answered with a 3-0 run to force Charleston into a timeout at 22-20. The Cougars went 2-1 to arrive at a set-point chance, 24-21, but Davidson fought off four straight, including a pair of kills by sophomore Jorden Benedict to force the extra possessions. Knotted at 24, Sawin regained possession with a putaway and served out the set for the 26-24 win.

Davidson took an early 3-1 lead to open the second set, but Charleston fought back to tie the score at 4-4, before pulling ahead 9-4 with a 5-0 run. The 'Cats stayed close, 16-13, but the Cougars opened the set up with a 5-2 run to pull ahead 20-14 and went ahead 2-0 in the match with a 25-17 win.

In the third set, Davidson was forced to play catch up from the start, as the Cougars jumped ahead to a 4-1 lead. A pair of Charleston hitting errors tied the score at 15, and with three straight scores, took the lead at 18-16. The Cougars answered with a 4-1 run of their own to tie the score at 20-20, and after the teams traded possessions, closed the match with four straight putaways to win the match with a 25-21 win.

The Wildcats return to action, closing out the Charleston swing, with a 2 p.m. match at The Citadel Sunday.
