DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson Wildcats' lacrosse head coach Kim Wayne has announced that the senior duo of Becky Horton (Walnut Creek, Calif.) and Jennifer Drew Lindsey (Davidson, N.C.) along with junior Jen Crawford (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) were chosen as captains for the 2009 season.
"All three captains bring a competitive edge, tremendous work ethic, strong leadership skills and a desire to take this Wildcat team to the next level," said Wayne, who is entering her first season at Davidson.
The trio played a big part in helping the Wildcats reach new levels last year when the lacrosse team rattled off a school-record 11 wins, breaking the 1997 and 2006 mark of nine wins in a season. Davidson finished 11-5, and set single season bests with a six-game winning streak, a .688 winning percentage, and goals allowed (143).
Becky Horton was one of five players last season to start and play in all 16 games. With her 30 goals and 9 assists, Horton was second-best on the team in overall points as well as draw controls with 22. Her 30 goals were a career-best as she had seven multi-goal games, including netting a personal-high six goals in a win at Cincinnati last year.
A defender for the Wildcats last year, Lindsey will help lead the defensive unit. Lindsey was in her first year with the Davidson lacrosse team in 2008 as she was tied for third on the team in caused turnovers with 11. Lindsey played in 11 games overall last season, starting eight of them. Despite missing the fall season due to an injury, she is expected to be back to full strength for the start of the season.
Crawford teamed up with Horton on the offensive side of the field as she was one of four Wildcats to hit the 30-goal mark, tallying a team-best 36 in her sophomore campaign. The junior midfielder's 39 points tied Horton for second-best on the team, while she was also second with 25 groundballs.
Davidson opens the 2009 season when they play host to Limestone, Feb. 13, at 6 p.m. at Richardson Stadium. It's first of eight straight home games for the Wildcats to open the year.
