DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcats will host an ACC opponent for a second straight home meet, welcoming the Clemson Tigers to the Cannon Natatorium at 6 p.m. on Thursday evening.
Scouting the Wildcats
Last time out: The Wildcats resumed the second half of the season against tough competition, dropping dual meets against both the Duke Blue Devils and the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday afternoon at Cannon Natatorium. The Wildcat women took losses against Duke, 160-83, and South Carolina, 145-98, while the men dropped the dual competition to Duke, 146-58, and South Carolina, 137.50-93.50.
Swimmers to watch: Freshman Lindsey Martin, the school record-holder in the both events, won the 50 free (24.02) and the 100 free (52.90) against Duke and South Carolina to lead the Wildcat women. Martin is also a member of three record-setting relays for the 'Cats this season (200, 400 and 800 free) and continues to be a swimmer to watch on the way to the conference championships. Classmates Anna Stringfield and Emily Castle have also set school records in their rookie campaign (200 free and 100 fly, respectively), while junior Alanna Ream matched her own school mark in the 500 free. Already the record holder in the 1000 and 1650 free, Ream looks in good shape heading to the first CCSA Championships as well.
On the men's side, sophomore Miller Williams swam a Wildcat Top-10 time in the 200 fly, finishing fourth against South Carolina and Duke in a personal-best of 1.57.93. Other record holders on the team include senior Fiete Stegger (50,100 free), Will Broughton (1000 free) and Scott Frantz (100 back). Frantz and Stegger have both bested their own school marks this season.
Scouting the Tigers
Last time out: The Tigers fell to nationally-ranked North Carolina on Saturday evening, but the women were able to edge Rutgers. The 15th-ranked Tar Heel men's team edged the Tigers, 168-132, while the women fell, 204-96, but defeated Rutgers, 214-80.
Swimmers to watch: Mark Vahle and Matt Balderston finished one-two in the 50 free against North Carolina for the Tiger men, who also got a lift in the 100 breast as Andy Bergren, Attila Ruszka, and Eric Lane finished first, second, and fourth, respectively. For the Clemson women, Michelle Parkhurst picked up the Tigers' first win of the day in the 100 back, touching in at an NCAA-B 55.57. Parkhurst added her second win in the 200 back, finishing in 1:59.32, and NCAA-B mark, over two and a half seconds ahead of the second place finisher. It was the second time she has won both events in North Carolina's Koury Natatorium in this season. Parkhurst swam the fastest time in the ACC in wins at the Nike Cup Invitational.
Next up: The Wildcats will host the UNC Wilmington Seahawks and Campbell Camels (w) in their final home meet of the season, next weekend at 1 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 26. Clemson will have a quick turn around, traveling to ACC-foe North Carolina State for a dual-meet in Raleigh on Sat., Jan. 19 at 11 a.m.
