DAVIDSON, N.C. – After outstanding four-year playing career on the field as well as in the classroom, senior tri-captains Nancy Haskell (Blacksburg, Va.) and Bevin English (Charleston, S.C.) of the Davidson women's soccer team were honored among an elite list on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-South Region team, recently.
Haskell earned a spot on the all-region second team, while English was an all-region honorable mention among goalkeepers. It marked the first time since 2002 that Davidson had a representative on any of the three all-region teams.
The academic award is the second for both seniors this year after they were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III teams on Nov 1.
To be eligible for the award, junior or senior student-athletes must have a minimum 3.3 grade point average and be a starter or significant contributor to the team's efforts.
Leading the way for the Wildcats this past fall on defense, while also providing tremendous leadership, was the senior duo of Haskell and English. They helped lead a stout Wildcat defense in 2007 that tied the school record for shutouts in a season with 10, which they both helped accomplish the same feat in 2005.
A tri-captain and already a three-time all-conference honoree, Haskell capped her senior campaign off with another nod on the All-Southern Conference First Team, marking the third straight year she had garnered first-team all-conference honors.
Recently, Haskell was named to the Soccer Buzz Southeast All-Regional Third Team which marked the second time in her career she earned a spot on the 14-member squad.
Besides helping the Wildcats to to a school record in shutouts, she also provided plenty of spark on offense. The senior defender assisted on a career-best six goals with all six assists coming in Wildcat wins, and three of them coming on game-winners.
The defender's junior campaign saw her became the second Wildcat ever to earn a nod on the NSCAA All-Region Third Team. In addition, she also earned a spot on CoSIDA Academic All-District III Team.
For her career, Haskell started all 81 games she played. She earned 11 assists to go along with two goals for 15 points.
Haskell also has excelled in the classroom, carrying a 3.74 GPA in economics. In 2006 she was selected by the faculty for the A.K. Phifer Award in economics – the department's top honor for academic achievement.
English had a season for the record books between the pipes, leaving Davidson as one of the best goalies in school history. The Wildcat' goalie this season set a school single-season and personal-best record for shutouts with 10. In addition, English set career bests in wins (13), saves (86), goals against average (0.81), minutes played (1,766:59) and goals allowed (16).
Besides the single season record for shutouts, English set the single season mark for goals against average, while placing her name atop the career record list in total shutouts (21) and goals against average (1.05).
English was named to the All-SoCon Second Team this year and also earned a spot on the SoCon All-Tournament Team after helping Davidson advance to the semifinals.
The senior goalie carries a 3.74 GPA and is majoring in biology.
Davidson concluded a very successful season by matching the 1999 and 2005 teams for most wins in a single-season with a 14-5-1 overall record. Davidson also tied the school-record for most shutouts in a season with 10.
The Wildcats, who finished second with an 8-1-1 regular season league mark, had their run in the SoCon tournament come to an end when they lost 1-0 to Furman in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 9.
The 'Cats finished ranked 10th in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas regional poll on Nov. 6.
