AUSTIN, Texas — Robert Mayo fought for the win in the Boys Division after posting a three-day total of 2-over-par 215 at the Fidelity Investments Stars of Texas Junior at the The University of Texas Golf Club.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Fidelity Investments Stars of Texas Junior was a 54-hole stroke play event held at The University of Texas Golf Club. The tournament field consisted of 120 players, 90 boys and 30 girls, from 12 states and Mexico. The Boys Division played the course at 7,170 yards and the Girls Division played at 6,113 yards.
Grinning from ear to ear, Mayo was very happy to clinch his second win of the summer before heading off to begin his freshman year at Davidson College. Starting one stroke behind the lead entering the final round, Mayo had a solid start off the tee. Mayo felt his short game was strong and was able to make key putts, including a 25-foot birdie on No. 17 to help keep the lead.
“It has been a great summer and it feels pretty nice,” Mayo said about his victory. “I felt solid at the beginning and played stress-free.”
Jordan Spieth of Dallas, finished second two strokes back from the lead at 4-over-par 217 for the tournament. Alex Moon of Dallas, finished third with 5-over-par 218 after posting the low-round score of 4-under-par 68. Devin Miertschin of El Paso, Texas, finished fourth at 6-over-par 219 and tied for fifth were Thomas Tatum of Dallas, and Dillon Rust of Edmond, Okla., with 7-over-par 220s.
